Energy as a Service

Our Virtual Power Plant

Demand-side virtual utility

Real-time demand response for a more resilient grid.

The energy system wasn’t built for today’s realities. Demand is rising, the grid is aging, and businesses are facing higher costs with greater volatility. At the same time, millions of small and medium-sized commercial buildings such as restaurants, fitness centers and retail stores represent one of the largest untapped sources of flexible energy available to help ease the burden.

Budderfly exists to unlock this potential. Our Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is real-time demand response platform activated across four of the country’s largest energy markets.

By coordinating energy usage behind the meter across our customer’s commercial sites, we are able to deliver grid flexibility and emissions reduction by transforming small and medium businesses into active grid assets.

Headshot of Al Subbloie.

“Our VPP capabilities help hundreds of commercial sites become intelligent, responsive, and critical parts of the grid. We’re proving that real grid flexibility doesn’t just come from factories and big-box stores, it can come from restaurants, fitness centers, and local businesses, too. Virtual power plants only work when participation is simple, seamless, and makes business sense. That’s the standard we’re building toward.”

How does it work?

Our VPP is the first of its kind designed for small and mid-sized commercial businesses, which make up an estimated $55 billion in annual U.S. electricity spending.

We install, monitor, and manage a combination of patented technologies, equipment upgrades, and proprietary energy software to drive down consumption at our customers’ facilities. Our VPP platform coordinates the energy usage of these technologies across sites, enabling real-time orchestration of HVAC, refrigeration, lighting, and battery systems to provide outcomes for our customers and the grid.

This hybrid model, combining infrastructure, software, and utility relationships, eliminates friction, maximizes responsiveness, and makes it possible to reliably aggregate flexible load from some of the most energy-intensive businesses.

Who benefits from a VPP?

As grid operators and businesses nationwide face rising energy demand, unpredictable pricing, and growing infrastructure strain, the Budderfly VPP creates new pathways for load flexibility in sectors that utilities often struggle to reach.

Customers

Our customers benefit from optimized energy usage and reduced demand charges, empowering them to unlock new revenue streams, tackle broader industry challenges, and become intelligent, responsive participants in the grid.

Utilities

Utilities benefit from reduced strain on the grid, as our combination of energy efficiency, real-time optimization, and software-driven Distributed Energy Resources (DER) coordination lets us aggregate flexible load across an often-overlooked segment.
